BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Fulani are the biggest ethnic group in the Sahel, with a population of 20 to 30 million people. The Fulani were formerly semi-nomadic cattle herders who traveled great miles along grazing routes in search of nourishment for their herds. The Fulani are a Sahelian ethnic group that is considered to be the biggest. The Fulani are largely located in northern Nigeria. However, a mix of political unrest and drought is sending them south, where they are battling with local farmers (Okoro, 2018). In recent years, tensions between farmers and herders have escalated substantially. According to Dr. Roudabeh Kishi, director of the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), which tracks and maps conflict, the conflict is becoming increasingly ethnic (Fulani vs. other Nigerian ethnicities), religious (Muslim herders vs. Christian south), and cultural (nomadic vs. sedentary). Between January and April of this year, Fulani ethnic militias were responsible for 217 civilian killings, according to ACLED statistics, with March being particularly brutal. During the same time period, Boko Haram, one of the continent's most lethal terrorist groups, killed 78 people. 'Fulani attacks on farmers are mostly pragmatic rather than ideological, since they compete for good grazing ground throughout the fall and winter months. Though many of the area's farming villages have long considered this as a seasonal issue, this month's uncommon amount of violence drew the attention of the national government and military,' adds Kishi (2018)

The notion of community development arose during the colonial period. It is made up of three main elements: community involvement, organization, and work. A process in which people of a community work together to tackle existing problems is known as community development. The community's economic, social, environmental, and cultural well-being are usually improved as a consequence of this form of collaborative effort. A small group or the entire community might begin community development activities.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The deadly battles between Fulani herders and farmers have caused devastation on many Nigerian villages. Many people have perished, many have been displaced, and property has been damaged, including crops, livestock, houses, automobiles, and so on. Herdsmen and crop farmers confrontations have become one of Nigeria's most significant security challenges, second only to the insurgency of Boko Haram (Okoro, 2018). The violent animosity between the two factions has expressed itself in the form of brutal fights (attacks and counter attacks).

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

1.To learn if Fulani herdsmen activities prevent companies from settling in communities.

2. To learn as to if Fulani herdsmen activities reduce the population of the communities.

3. To know if residents evade from the communities during the Fulani herdsmen attacks

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. Does the activities of Fulani herdsmen cause growth of communities?

2. What are the effect of Fulani herdsmen in communities?

3. Do the activities of Fulani herdsmen have an impact on the increase in infrastructure?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this research work is to emphasis on the effect of the impact of Fulani herders on community development, and this research would prove beneficial for other academics, intellectuals, and students that might want to organize similar research.

1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY

This study concentrate on the influence of Fulani herdsmen attack on community service, the was carried out in Esako, Edo state.

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The following factors poses to be a limitation during the course of this research

Financial constraint– Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint– The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.8 DEFINTION OF TERMS

HERDSMEN: they own or keep domesticated animal herd
